The Early Years

Bentley Music Store Signage

The story of Bentley Music began in 1975 when Mr. Phua Sin Loke opened his first store along Masjid India. Little did he expect that what began over 30 years ago, would one day turn into the largest music instrument retailer and distributor in the country. From modest beginnings selling brass instruments, woodwinds, violins, guitars and pianos, the company has grown to become a favourite destination for musicians.

At the heart of Bentley Music's success is Mr Phua’s foresight and expertise in music retailing. And he achieved this through embodying a customer philosophy of quality, service and unparalleled selection under one roof that resonates with musicians.

The explosion of rock 'n' roll signalled a transforming moment in the development of new music gear. During this time, the company caught the rising demand for guitars, basses, amplifiers and related equipment. This was central to Mr. Phua's decision to expand to new premises to offer a wider choice of best selling instruments. It also led the company to represent some of the biggest and most respectable brands in the music industry.

Bukit Bintang Outlet

In 1981 Bentley Music acquired its own building in Jalan Bukit Bintang launching a super store with a 20,000-square-foot showroom. At the time of its acquisition, Mr. Phua did not expect that his street-level storefront would one day be in the centre of a Golden Triangle for commerce. This store once claimed to be "the largest music store" in the country and became a landmark in its own right. Spread over four levels of retail space, it has everything a musician needs, making it a music mecca to locals and foreigners. Based on the success of this store, the company built a devoted customer base; and in 2007 was looking for new ways to spread its wings.
